Program details
Program structure
The master's degree program covers the areas of science communication (research, methods, history of theory), knowledge cultures, digital media in science communication, interdisciplinary research and professional skills as well as an in-depth elective subject in the natural and technical sciences. It comprises four "subjects", in each of which three thematically defined modules must be completed:
- science communication: research, methods, history of theory
- interdisciplinary research and professional skills
- digital media in science communication
- cultures of knowledge in the natural and technical sciences
With this degree program, you will deepen your knowledge of theories and methods of science communication research as well as current issues in science communication and apply these in research projects. You will deal with digital media and the influence of digitalization on science communication and learn basic methods and application contexts of data mining.
From a media and communication science, linguistic and sociological perspective, you will examine methods of knowledge acquisition in various sciences and their epistemic cultures, reflect on the relationship between media and knowledge and use qualitative methods to investigate the conditions and practices of knowledge acquisition and knowledge communication.
Qualification profile of the graduate
The Master's degree program provides students with an in-depth knowledge and the competence in applying scientific methods in the research on Science Communication and Epistemic Cultures, Media Studies, Media Ethics and Professional Ethics as well as in an elective module in the field of Natural Sciences and Engineering. Practical science communication skills are deepened and expanded in one of the two elective modules “Journalism” or “Public Relations”. Furthermore the students acquire basic knowledge in Business Administration and Law. The Master degree qualifies to take up a PhD project and prepares for a professional career in science journalism, public relations for scientific organizations as well as for strategic communications consultancy.
Interdisciplinary key qualifications comprising 6 credit points are acquired integratively.
Career prospects
The master's degree qualifies you to enter professional fields at the interface between science and the public. This includes, for example, science journalism, media and public relations work for research institutions and companies, or working as a speaker in the field of communication between science, politics and the public.
With a good master's degree and scientific ambitions, it could also be interesting for you to pursue a doctorate and a subsequent career at a university or research institution in the field of science communication.
