What is it all about?
A degree in Information Systems combines business administration, computer science and law and gives you a deep understanding of digital transformation. You will learn to analyze business processes, design IT systems and optimize operational processes with digital solutions. The focus is on topics such as databases, software development, artificial intelligence and IT security. You will also acquire methodical and analytical skills to tackle complex business and technological challenges. The close interlinking of the three subject areas will enable you to use digital innovations in a targeted manner and make companies more efficient. The degree program in Information Systems at KIT is characterized in particular by the large number of options and alternatives in the networked disciplines. The great freedom of choice allows you to determine your own study focus and tailor your studies to your own abilities and inclinations.
Program structure
During your studies, you have various subjects, which consist of one or more modules. A module deals with a specific topic and consists of one or more courses. In the module handbook for your degree program, you will find a description of the modules and their subject assignment as well as a study plan. This gives you an orientation as to which courses you should attend in which semester in order to complete your studies within the standard period of study. It takes into account a balanced distribution of courses over the individual semesters. It also ensures that you are first taught the important basics before moving on to more advanced topics. Your individual course of study may differ from this.
Information Systems at KIT is characterized by a real interdisciplinary approach based on a cross-department model. The program content of the first four semesters is organized in five subjects:
- Information Systems (16 CP)
basic concepts of business informatics, concepts and systems for digitalization at the individual, group, organizational and market levels - Computer Science (54 - 63 CP)
you will attend the courses Fundamentals of Computer Science, Programming, Algorithms, Theoretical Foundations, Communication and Data Management and Software Engineering together with the students on the bachelor's degree program in Informatics. You will also take Applied Computer Science. - Mathematics (26 LP)
your mathematics program includes linear algebra, analysis, development of mathematical models, descriptive statistics, probability theory, elements of estimation and test theory - Economics (31 - 40 CP)
business administration (marketing, production, finance and accounting), operations research and economics - Law (26 CP)
fundamentals of the German Civil Code, public law and commercial law
You will also attend a seminar (3 CP), which must belong to one of the areas of computer science, economics or law. You take your elective modules in the 5th and 6th semesters. They aim to deepen and apply your knowledge.
Stays abroad
KIT offers a wide range of options for stays abroad, from individual courses to a year abroad. Especially if you are interested in a longer stay abroad, it is advisable to contact the International Students Office early on.
Bachelor's thesis
At the end of your bachelor's degree, you will complete your bachelor's thesis, an academic paper that allows you to apply and deepen the knowledge and skills you have acquired. You can write it in one of the fields of economics, computer science or law. It usually deals with a specific topic in your field of study and requires independent research, analysis and writing. The bachelor's thesis takes a maximum of four months to complete.
Additional information
In addition to the module handbook, our booklet about the study program is a useful source of information. It also covers topics such as application procedure, starting your studies and career prospects.
Qualification profile of the graduate
KIT’s Information Systems Program is characterized by practiced real interdisciplinarity based on an interdepartmental model. The contents of studies in the first four semesters are organized in five focus areas:
- Information Systems (basic concepts of information systems, concepts and systems for digitalization on the levels of the individual, group, organization, and market).
- Informatics (basic concepts of informatics, programming, algorithms, theoretical basics, communication and data storage, applied informatics, software technology).
- Mathematics & Statistics (linear algebra, analysis, development of mathematical models, descriptive statistics, probability theory, elements of estimation and testing theory).
- Economics and Management (business administration, marketing, production, finance and accounting, operations research, and economics).
- Law (basics of the Civil Code, public law, trade law).
The team project “software development” in the 5th semester implements the research-based teaching concept and ensures high practical relevance of the studies. In teams, students develop a functioning application software using latest methods and tools. The program is complemented by a variety of electives offered by the KIT Department of Economics and Management and the KIT Department of Informatics. In this way, students are given the opportunity to specialize as desired during Bachelor's studies already. Students can decide in favor of a focus with 9 or 18 credits in Informatics or Economics and Management.
Thanks to the basic methodological knowledge acquired, graduates can name specific basic concepts, methods, models, and approaches and use them in an interdisciplinary way.
They can identify, describe, and communicate problems and topics of economics and management, information technology, and law. Along this range of topics, they can plan, analyze, compare, evaluate, and optimize information systems and infrastructures in business and society. They make decisions, develop specific solutions, and implement their innovative ideas using methods and models from the different disciplines taking into account the given resources. Graduates can document, present, validate, assess, and assure the quality of the results obtained. KIT’s graduates of the Bachelor's program in Information Systems are capable of executing a corresponding task in industry, in the services sector, or in the trades sector, of establishing an own business, or starting Master's studies in Information Systems or a related subject.
The contents of the studies are structured in a modular way.
In the subjects of Informatics and Economics/Management, modules in the total amount of 94 credits have to be passed.
Transferable skills in the amount of 6 credits are imparted mainly in the modules of Information Systems I, Programming, team project, and Bachelor's Thesis.
Career prospects
How is digitalization changing companies and society? How can operational processes be optimized through the use of digital technologies? How can data be analyzed and protected? You will deal with all these questions and many more during and after your bachelor's degree in Information Systems. You will be optimally prepared for these questions, as you will not only have in-depth knowledge in the fields of computer science and economics, but also the necessary knowledge of legal issues, which makes the program particularly special. After completing their bachelor's degree, many students go on to complete a master's degree in order to further deepen their individual specialization. However, it is also possible to start a career after completing the bachelor's degree. Whether in consulting firms or the high-tech industry - after completing your bachelor's degree at KIT, you will be a sought-after specialist and manager and shape the digital economy.

Admission and language requirements
Higher education entrance qualification (HZB)
Germans and persons of equal status to Germans (i.e. EU/EEA nationals and non-EU/EEA nationals with a German higher education entrance qualification) are entitled to study at KIT if they have one of the following qualifications:
- General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur)
- (relevant) subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification (not Fachhochschulreife)
- Delta examination of the University of Mannheim (for holders of a Fachhochschulreife)
- recognized advanced vocational training (e.g. master craftsperson) or vocational training, professional experience and aptitude test for those with professional qualifications
For further options, see §58 of the "Landeshochschulgesetz" (State Higher Education Act).
Please note: German nationals with a foreign school-leaving qualification must have the relevant "Regierungspräsidium" (regional authority) certify that their qualification is equivalent to the German Abitur.
For non-EU/EEA nationals with a foreign school-leaving certificate (hereinafter also referred to simply as non-EU/EEA nationals), the school-leaving certificate from some countries is recognized as a direct university entrance qualification in Germany. In many cases, however, in addition to the school-leaving certificate, a university entrance examination and/or a successful year of study in the home country and/or the "Feststellungsprüfung" must be proven with valid documents in order to be allowed to study a bachelor's degree in Germany. You can find the country-specific regulations in the DAAD admissions database or on the Anabin website (in German only) of the "Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen" (Central Office for Foreign Education). Further information is available from the International Students Office.
Language requirements and certificates
For the bachelor's degree program in Information Systems, you need sufficient knowledge of the German language. Your German language skills must correspond to at least level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Proof of sufficient German language skills
Your higher education entrance qualification (HZB) is sufficient proof of your German language skills,
-
if you obtained it at a German-speaking school in Germany or abroad,
-
if you are a graduate of a bilingual secondary school in Germany or abroad and have passed a bilingual German examination, such as the AbiBac or the Gemischtsprachiges International Baccalaureat (GIB) or
-
if you graduated from a foreign school, but there is another official agreement with the respective country on the recognition of your school-leaving certificate or language certificate as proof of language proficiency for university studies in Germany.
A complete list of foreign school-leaving qualifications and language certificates that are recognized as proof of sufficient German language skills can be found on the website of the Kultusministerkonferenz (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany).
If you did not obtain your higher education entrance qualification at a German-speaking institution, you must provide a separate language certificate - regardless of your nationality. Only the following are accepted
- the passed „Prüfungsteil Deutsch“ of the Feststellungsprüfung,
- the passed DSH with the overall result DSH-2,
- the passed TestDaF level 4 in all four parts of the exam (reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, oral expression) or
- a comparable, recognized certificate of sufficient German language skills.
To find out which other recognized certificates can be accepted as comparable by KIT, please contact
- as a German or German-equivalent applicant: Studierendenservice
- as an applicant with non-EU citizenship: International Students Office
Please note:
Language certificates are extremely important application documents that can prevent your enrollment if you do not submit them on time. Therefore, check early on in the application process whether you have the necessary language certificates for your degree program and, if necessary, plan to take one of the language tests mentioned above. The deadline by which you must submit language certificates corresponds to the enrollment deadline stated in your admission offer. In justified cases, you can apply for an extension of this deadline. The extension can be granted until the start of the lecture period at the latest.
Additional necessary requirements for enrollment
For Germans and those with German equivalent status, an additional necessary requirement for enrollment is proof of participation in a study orientation test (e.g. www.was-studiere-ich.de) or a study orientation consultation in accordance with §7 of the "Landeshochschulgesetz" (State Higher Education Act), e.g. by the Student Advisory Service (ZSB) of KIT. Non-EU/EEA nationals do not have to provide this proof.
Selection procedure
Selection procedure for German and German-equivalent applicants
There are 167 study places available. After deducting the preliminary quotas for hardship cases (5%), foreigners (10%) and second degree applicants (2%), 10% of the study places are allocated to the applicants with the longest waiting time. 90% of study places are allocated via a selection procedure.
The selection procedure is mainly based on the applicants' academic performance. On the basis of these achievements and so-called other achievements, a ranking is made according to points.
Calculation of the selection points:
- sum of the points in the Abitur certificate divided by 56 or 60
max. 15 points
- average of all half-year courses of the last two school years in the subjects mathematics, German and the best-graded scientific/technical subject (incl. computer science)
max. 15 points
- other achievements (completed relevant vocational training; relevant professional practice, special previous training, practical activities, extracurricular achievements and qualifications)
max. 15 points
value 1 + value 2 + value 3 = max. 45 points in total
The results of the selection procedures of previous years can be found in the "Zulassungsergebnisse" brochure ( only available in German).
Detailed information on the selection procedure can be found in the statutes for the university's own selection procedure for the degree program.
Selection procedure for applicants from non-EU/EEA countries
Please note that a different selection procedure applies for third-country nationals (non-EU/EEA). This selection procedure is based on the higher education entrance qualification. The higher education entrance qualification can be based on academic achievements in school, any previous academic achievements at universities and/or the "Feststellungsprüfung".
