Program structure

In the master's program at KIT, you no longer have any compulsory courses, but can tailor your studies to your personal interests. The following subjects must be taken:

  • Business Informatics: 18 CP
  • Computer Science: 30 CP
  • Economics: 18 CP
  • Law: 18 CP
  • Seminars: 6 CP

Within the subjects, you have a large selection of courses to choose from. You will benefit from the courses offered by the two large KIT Departments of Informatics and Economics and Management. Finally, you will complete a master's thesis worth 30 CP, in which you can apply the scientific methods you have learned in a research area of your choice.

Stays abroad

KIT offers a wide range of options for stays abroad, from individual courses to a year abroad. Especially if you are interested in a longer stay abroad, it is advisable to contact the International Students Office early on.

KIT’s Information System Program is characterized by real interdisciplinarity based on a cross-faculty model involving the KIT Departments of Informatics and Economics & Management. The Master's Program of Information Systems has a duration of four semesters and comprises four pillars of studies.

  1. Information Systems: The Information Systems modules impart both established concepts of Information Systems, such as the development and management of information systems, and modern aspects of Information Systems, such as the development of digital business models.
  2. Informatics: This pillar covers a wide range of choices in the field of Informatics such as algorithms, data engineering, software engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence, telematics, safety, and human-machine interaction.
  3. Economics & Management: In the area of economics & management, a large variety of courses can be chosen e.g. in entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, production, operations research, econometrics, or economics.
  4. Law: KIT offers a large range of law modules with a particular focus on information technology.

The desired breadth of qualification is achieved by students having to pass at least two modules in the amount of 18 credits in each of the four thematic core areas mentioned above. In informatics, modules in the total amount of 30 credits must be attended. At least two seminars in business informatics, informatics, economics, or law and the Master's thesis serve to develop the students’ capability of writing and presenting own scientific work.

Thanks to the involvement of the two KIT departments, the Master's program offers many selection and specialization options and pursues a research-oriented teaching concept of high practical relevance.

KIT graduates are characterized by their interdisciplinary methodological competence and their innovative skills in shaping digital transformation of business and society. Based on their knowledge and skills, graduates are capable of independently identifying economic and information technology situations as well as innovative development potentials for the digitization of processes, products, and services and of implementing these potentials within the existing legal framework conditions.

KIT graduates in Information Systems design information assets in an interdisciplinary manner and develop information systems from a socio-technical perspective to create social and economic value by the digitization of business and society. They can analyze and structure complex subject-relevant problems and requirements and develop customized solutions and action options. Advantages and drawbacks of existing methods, models, technologies, and approaches can be identified, compared to alternatives, critically assessed, and transferred to new applications. In accordance with the needs, KIT graduates can also combine and adapt these methods and independently develop novel solution options that are then implemented using innovative information and communication technologies. Depending on the subjects chosen, KIT graduates will possess the qualifications needed for interdisciplinary activities as IT managers, consultants, technology entrepreneurship, process managers, startup founders, as well as for a further scientific career.

The contents of the studies are structured in a modular way.

Excerpt from the diploma supplement of the study program

Data science, IT management, digital marketing management, consulting or software development are just a small selection of the possible professional fields in which you can work after completing your master's degree. A master's degree in Information Systems opens up excellent career prospects for you. During your studies, you will acquire comprehensive knowledge in the fields of computer science, economics and law. Thanks to your solid basic mathematical training, you will be able to take a structured approach to complex issues. As a specialist and manager, you will be able to work nationally and internationally wherever this interface competence is required. The areas of application are just as varied as the career opportunities. A doctorate following the master's degree also offers you an attractive opportunity to further deepen your specialist knowledge. Last but not least, you can become self-employed with a creative business idea. KIT supports you on this path.

Admission requirements

The requirements for admission to the master's degree program in Information Systems are based on the current admission regulations:

  • bachelor's degree
a bachelor's degree (or at least an equivalent degree) in Information Systems (or a program with essentially the same content) from a university, university of applied sciences, university of cooperative education or a foreign university. The program must have been completed within a standard period of study of at least three years and with a minimum number of 180 ECTS credits.
  • minimum knowledge and minimum achievements
you must provide evidence of the following achievements in your bachelor's degree or as part of other degree programs:
    • mathematics and/or statistics: 15 credit points (application-oriented content, e.g. OR is not taken into account)
    • if the qualifying bachelor's degree program is a business degree program: an additional 20 credit points in computer science or business informatics
    • if the qualifying bachelor's degree program is a computer science degree program: an additional 20 credit points in business subjects

If you have any questions about making up credits for the admission criteria, you can contact the Student Advisory Service (ZSB) of the KIT. Please note that the event "Für den Master ans KIT?" is offered at regular intervals for this topic.

Language requirements and certificates

For the master's degree program in Information Systems, you need sufficient knowledge of the German language. Your German language skills must correspond to at least level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Proof of sufficient German language skills

Your school-leaving certificate is sufficient proof of your German language skills if

  • you obtainted it at a German-speaking school in Germany or abroad
  • you are a graduate of a bilingual secondary school in Germany or abroad and have passed a bilingual German examination, such as the AbiBac or the Gemischtsprachiges International Baccalaureat (GIB)
  • you obtained your degree at a foreign school, but there is another official agreement with the respective country on the recoginition of your school-leaving certificate or language certificate as proof of language proficiency for university studies in Germany

A complete list of foreign school-leaving and language certificates that are recognizes as proof of sufficient German language skills can be found on the webste of the Kultusministerkonferenz (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany).

If you have not obtained your higher education entrance qualification (HZB) at one of the above-mentioned institutions, you must provide a separate language certificate - regardless of your nationality. Only the following are accepted

  • the passed „Prüfungsteil Deutsch“ of the Feststellungsprüfung,
  • the passed DSH with an overall result DSH-2,
  • the passed TestDaF level 4 in all four parts of the examination (reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, oral expression)
  • a comparable, recognized certificate of sufficient German language skills

To find our which other recognized certificates can be accepted by KIT as comparable, please contact

Please note:
Language certificates are extremely important application documents that can prevent your enrollment if you do not submit them on time. Therefore, check early on in the application process whether you have the necessary language certificates for your degree program and, if necessary, plan to take one of the language tests mentioned above. The deadline by which you must submit language certificates corresponds to the enrollment deadline stated in your admission offer. In justified cases, you can apply for an extension of this deadline. The extension can be granted until the start of the lecture period at the latest.

There are 88 study places available each year. These are allocated on the basis of a ranking list of applicants who meet the admission requirements. The ranking list is based on a maximum of 40 achievable assessment points.

The selection procedure is carried out if more applicants meet the admission criteria than there are places available.

Your place on the ranking list is determined by the sum of the following points:

  • for the overall grade of your final academic examination: up to 15 points
  • for your previous examination achievements in mathematics and/or statistics: 1 point per credit point, max. 25 points (application-oriented achievements are not taken into account)
