Program details
Profile
The master's degree program in Sports Science provides students with an extended and in-depth knowledge of the natural sciences, medicine and the social and health sciences in the field of sports science. The degree program consists of a core subject, a profile subject and subject-independent modules. In the core subject, you will be taught cross-profile content that is relevant as a prerequisite for all three study profiles. In the profile subject, you have the opportunity to choose between three study profiles:
- Movement and Technology
- Exercise and Health
- Exercise and Sport in Childhood and Adolescence (in conjunction with Heidelberg University and Karlsruhe University of Education).
Depending on your individual interests, you can specialize in the technical and scientific fields of sports science, in the field of health sports or with a focus on movement and sport in childhood and adolescence.
Regardless of the subject, you will acquire further skills for a research-oriented position in a management role through internships, key qualifications and the master's thesis.
You will be involved in ongoing projects at an early stage and can thus gain insights into various research projects. Particular emphasis is placed on interdisciplinarity and cooperation with institutions from other departments.
Program structure
The program comprises 120 credit points (CP). These are distributed as follows:
To the profile subject:
- 36 CP
To the core subject:
- 12 CP Specialization in Sports Science
- 22 CP Research Methods
- 4 CP Theory and Practice of Sports
On modules independent of the subject:
- 6 CP interdisciplinary qualifications
- 10 CP internship
- 30 CP master's thesis
Qualification profile of the graduate
The graduates of the Master's program in Sports Science have an extended and in-depth knowledge in the natural science, medical and social science fields of sports science. According to individual interests, profiling takes place in the technical areas of sports science, in the area of health sports or target-group-specific with a focus on sports and physical activity of children and young people.
Graduates are able to define and interpret the particularities, limitations, terminologies and doctrines in the chosen thematic and theoretical fields of sports science. They can reflect the current state of research and understand, analyse, assess and further develop internationally published specialist literature. They can formulate their own research ideas, select suitable methods, apply appropriate test procedures and analyse, evaluate, interpret and classify results.
Graduates can plan, carry out and evaluate target-group-specific movement-related interventions. In doing so, they are in a position to take social developments and scientific findings into account, to assess complexity and risks and to develop improvement and solution approaches.
Graduates can independently familiarise themselves with new subject areas related to the study subject and transfer learned methods to other questions as well as apply them in a situation-specific manner. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject and the numerous cooperations with institutions from other disciplines, the graduates have points of contact with other disciplines and can exchange ideas with their representatives as well as with representatives of their own subject. They can use suitable presentation methods to discuss on a scientific level and to debate and internationally present information, ideas and problems.
Graduates can work both independently and as part of a team and, through contact with specific target groups such as children and young people, the elderly, sportsmen and women or patients, have a pronounced degree of social behaviour that enables them to deal appropriately with a wide variety of groups of people. They are therefore particularly qualified for fields of activity in industry, the service sector and the health sector as well as for a subsequent academic career (doctorate).
Career prospects
The skills you acquire will qualify you for management positions in the following professional fields, depending on the focus of your master's degree: e.g. (sports) therapeutic facilities, companies (workplace health promotion), fitness and performance centers, health insurance companies, clubs, associations, municipalities (sports administration), sports tourism (fitness, wellness, rehabilitation) sports management, sports marketing.
You will also be able to carry out and evaluate your own empirical projects. The program therefore offers you access to an academic career and lays the foundations for a subsequent doctorate.
