Technology Assessment is an interdisciplinary field of research and political advice, where the impact of new technologies on humans, society and environment has been analyzed and assessed. The objective is the creation of the scientific and technological progress and its dynamics oriented on the normative and empirical concept of responsibility.  Thus, research activities of TA are part of action and decision making processes, specifically in scientific-based policy advice. In module 1 (lecture and seminar) the history of TA will be provided profoundly. Thus, on the one side, lecture and seminar are dealing with the reflection of society, democracy, technology and science in their specific historical characteristics. On the other side, conceptional approaches of TA will be comprehensively introduced and discussed. Furthermore, significant methodological challenges like the development of robust future knowledge or the complex dealing with different types of scientifc expertise will be provided. Based on empirical examples like the autonomous driving or climate change, the scientific contributions of TA will clarify the aims of TA in society and science.
