Degree and duration

Regular program length of 3 years leading to a "Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)" degree; 180 credit points (corresponding to the Europen Credit Transfer and Accumulation System - ETCS) must be completed. Individual program length may differ from normal program length.

Studienaufbau

Am Anfang des Studiums werden Grundlagen in Materialwissenschaft, Mathematik, Chemie und Physik vermittelt. Ergänzend dazu erwirbst du Basiswissen in Technischer Mechanik, Elektrotechnik, Informatik und Betriebswirtschaftslehre. Darauf aufbauend wird vertieft auf die Werkstoffprozesstechnik und den konkreten Einsatz von Werkstoffen eingegangen. In jedem Semester werden Inhalte durch ein Laborpraktikum, v.a. Chemie- und Rechnerpraktika, gestützt. Im höheren Semester kommen 1-2 Lehrveranstaltungen als Wahlmodul hinzu. In der Bachelorarbeit vertiefst du ein von dir gewähltes Thema. Zum Studienplan gehören auch Wahlleistungen im Bereich überfachliche Kompetenzen, z.B. Seminare zu Lern- und Arbeitstechniken oder ein Sprachkurs.

The Bachelor's program of Materials Science and Engineering is based on scientific principles and methodological skills. Due to a research-based and practical focus during the six-semester program, graduates of the Bachelor of Science “Materials Science and Engineering” of the KIT are well prepared for lifelong learning and working in industrial, service and public sectors.

The graduates are skilled in comprehensive knowledge of materials science, mathematics, natural science and mechanics. Moreover, they have corresponding advanced knowledge of the specifics of the material classes metals, ceramics and polymers as well as their production and application within the materials processing technology. Thanks to this fundamental knowledge of scientific theories, principles and methods, graduates are able to solve given problems of materials science and engineering.

Due to the competences gained during different lab courses, by the compulsory elective subject as well as the Bachelor's thesis they are able to identify solutions for interdisciplinary problems regarding the synthesis, the processing and the application of materials. As to the evaluation of materials for applications, graduates of the Bachelor of Science “Materials Science and Engineering” of the KIT are able to choose basic methods in a familiar context and generate models on material behavior.

They are able to deal with given problems and corresponding tasks within collaboratively organized teams by working independently, integrating results of other team members, and present as well as interpret their own results. They are able to choose and develop materials and processes and apply given assessment criteria in consideration of a technical, economic and social framework. The Bachelor's program aims at gaining the skills for successfully completing a consecutive Master's degree as well as applying the gained know-how in specific professional fields.

Neue Materialien und ständig verbesserte Werkstoffe sind Voraussetzung und zugleich Anstoß für moderne Technologien. In Wissenschaft und Industrie wächst deshalb der Bedarf an Fachleuten mit einer in diesem Bereich fundierten universitären Ausbildung. Durch die forschungsorientierte und interdisziplinäre Ausrichtung des Studiengangs am KIT wirst du auf lebenslanges Lernen und einen Einsatz in Industrie, Dienstleistung und öffentlicher Verwaltung vorbereitet. Es erwarten dich vielfältige Berufsfelder mit Bezug zur Herstellung, Weiterverarbeitung, Anwendung und Charakterisierung von Werkstoffen. Dazu gehören die Forschungs- und Entwicklungsabteilungen von Unternehmen, z.B. der Kunststoff-, Metall- und Elektroindustrie, aber auch Prüfinstitute und Forschungseinrichtungen. Für forschungsnahe Tätigkeiten werden in der Regel höhere Qualifikationsstufen erwartet. Es empfiehlt sich also, nach dem Bachelor das Masterstudium zu absolvieren. Der Bachelorabschluss in Materialwissenschaft und Werkstofftechnik qualifiziert dich für einen einschlägigen Masterstudiengang. Bei gutem Masterabschluss und wissenschaftlichem Interesse kannst du dich um eine Promotion (Doktorarbeit) bemühen.

German applicants and those with German-equivalent applicant status

Germans, EU nationals, and non-EU nationals with a German university entrance qualification are eligible to study at KIT if they have one of the following qualifications:

  1. General university entrance qualification (Abitur)
  2. (relevant) Fachgebundene Hochschulreife (subject-linked university entrance qualification, not Fachhochschulreife / university of applied sciences entrace qualification)
  3. Delta examination of the University of Mannheim (for holders of a Fachhochschulreife)
  4. a recognized diploma of advanced vocational training (e.g. technician, Meister diploma for craftsman) or an aptitude test for vocationally qualified persons

Furthermore, prerequisite for enrollment is the participation in a study orientation test (e.g. at www.was-studiere-ich.de) or a study orientation counseling, e.g. by the Zentrale Studienberatung (student advisory services) at KIT, according to §60 Landeshochschulgesetz (State Higher Education Act).

German citizens with foreign school-leaving qualifications must have the equivalence of their qualification with the German Abitur certified by the responsible Regierungspraesidium (regional authority).

Foreign nationals (non-EU)

In Germany, the school leaving certificate of institutions in certain countries is accepted as direct means to enter university. In order to start your bachelor's studies in Germany, a university entrange test and / or one completed year of education at an institute of higher education and / or the "Feststellungsprüfung" (test of aptitude of foreign applicants for studies at universities in Germany) needs to be demonstrated in addition in most cases. You can find country-specific regulations in the "Zulassungsdatenbank des DAAD" (database on adimission requirements of the German Academy Exchange Service) or in the Anabin database (database of the "Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen", only available in German). Knowledge of the German language for foreign nationals

In order to be accepted into a study program taught in German, foreign nationals need to demonstrate knowledge of the German language. For your application, you need to demonstrate knowledge of level B1. All such certificates are accepted, even a certificate of attendance of a B1 course. During the enrollment process, you need to submit a DSH2 certificate or an accepted equivalent thereof. If you have further questions, please contact the International Students Office.

Prepatory courses at KIT: The MINT-Kolleg offers prospective and first-year students support in natural science and technical subjects (STEM).

In addition, the KIT-Departments offer special preliminary courses before the start of the semester program during the "O-Phase" (orientation week).
