Program details
Profile
The curriculum of the modularized master's degree program in German Literature at the Institute of German Studies: Literature, Language, Media at KIT covers medieval, early modern, modern and contemporary literature in its cultural and media contexts.
A special feature of the text and cultural studies-oriented master's degree program is its focus on the subject area of "knowledge". In the environment of our natural science and technology university, productive synergies arise with regard to this topic, which represent a unique selling point of the master's program. The program benefits in particular from its close cooperation with the degree programs History of Art, Liberal Arts and Sciences, European Culture and History of Ideas and Science - Media - Communication.
The Karlsruhe master's degree program is given a special character by annually changing focal points on which courses and workshops are offered. There are also research-led events that accompany ongoing projects.
Furthermore, thanks to various cooperations with cultural institutions in the Karlsruhe area, the master's program in German Literature gives you the opportunity to gain experience in the field of literature and knowledge transfer as well as archive and museum work during your studies. Each academic year, a practical seminar is offered in cooperation with one of these institutions.
Program structure
The program has a standard duration of 4 semesters and a total of 120 credit points (CP). In terms of content, it is divided into different "subjects": into a compulsory subject "Interdisciplinary Humanities" - and 3 compulsory elective subjects, from which you choose two:
Modern German Literature (NdL)
Medieval Studies
Literature, Culture, Language and Media (LKSM)
Each subject comprises two modules, each module comprises two courses, usually an advanced seminar and a colloquium or a master's course. Such a course is a lecture that regularly includes interaction between the teacher and students.
Qualification profile of the graduate
German studies treats literary and pragmatic texts from the 8th century to the present in their cultural and historical interrelations. They focus the methodic interpretation of texts as well as their embedement in social-, media- and culture-historical contexts. The contents of German language and literature constitute a homogene field that includes from a philological, historical and theoretical point of view the literature from the 8th to the 15th century („Medieval Literature Studies) and from the 15th century to present age (Modern German Literature). They also comprise media studies.
The students obtain theoretical knowledge and methodical skills to understand the achievements of historical cultures, to relativise their own mode of thought and to adopt objectifying procedures, with which historical subjects may be conceived and explained in an adequate way.
The aim of these Master's studies is to achieve the ability to deal with scientific/academic problems in the chosen Master's subject with appropriate methods. It demands a more intense grade of methodical and theoretical occupation with the special items than the preceded Bachelor's studies. It also requires a deepend and a self-reliant exposure of academic issues in the central areas of German Studies (Literary Studies, Media Studies).
The courses (Ober- and Kandidatenseminare/advanced seminars and colloquia) aim to prepare the students for their Master's thesis and to deepen their systematic and literary-historical knowledges beyond their Master's thesis’ subject.
Career prospects
Depending on your personal focus in the master's degree, there are various career prospects. With a master's degree in German Literature, you can aspire to managerial positions in language and literature teaching, in the press and public relations departments of companies and public institutions and as an editor in the publishing industry.
