Degree and duration

Regular program length of 2 years leading to a "Master of Science (M.Sc.)" degree; 120 credit points (corresponding to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System - ECTS) must be completed. Individual prorgram length may differ from regular program length.

The master's degree program has a regular progam length of four semester. One semester is dedicated to the master's thesis. After graduation (degree Master of Science), one can continue post-graduate studies and a PhD should coursework and achievements be graded above average.

The Master's degree program serves to further enhance or complement the scientific qualifications acquired during Bachelor's studies. The graduates are able to independently apply scientific findings and methods and to assess their significance and scope for the solution of complex scientific and social problems.

Students choose the focus of their studies by choosing a field of specialization in the amount of 84 credits.

Each field of specialization covers defined, coordinated modules in the compulsory elective subjects "Basic Modules of Specialization" and "Compulsory Modules of Specialization”. In the compulsory elective subject "Elective Modules of Specialization," students can choose modules freely. Electrical engineers can be found wherever electrical controls and / or engines are designed, manufactures, implemented and maintained. whether it be in electrical devices, digital devices, machines, vehicles, buildings or plants. It spans from microelectronics components to large-scale power plants. The variety of possible working sectors thus is rather vast: automotive manufacturing and supply, communication electronics, building electronics and security technology, energy generation and distribution, medical technology, automation technology and more. Electrical and information engineeris develop the relevant systems and their components, conduct research to increase their efficiency or their environmental sustainability, and install, maintain and repair them. They develop control concepts, components or software. Additional fields of work may also be process and quality management, sales and consulting.

Master's graduates can work in challenging specialist and managerial functions. A doctorate can even be considered, should the master's program be completed above-average.

Admission requirements

Admission to the degree program requires successful completion of a degree program resembling the bachelor's degree program in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at KIT in content and volume. The following must be part of the program:

  • advanced mathematics
  • fundamentals of eletrical engineering (e.g. "linear eletrical networks", "electromagnetic fields", "electromagnetic waves", "electronic circuit")
  • systems engineering (e.g. "system dynamics and control systems engineering", "signals and system")
  • digital and information technology

Language skills necesarry for international applicants

International applicants need to submit proof of the following language skill:

  • German language skills: for application, skills of at least B1-level are necessary. All certificates are accepted; a certificate of attendance of a B1-level course is sufficient. For enrollment, a DSH2 certificate or equivalent needs to be presented.
  • or English language skills of at least B2-level, e.g. proven by Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of at least 90 points in the internet-based test or equivalent. Proof of English language skills is not required for applicants who
    • have completed a degree program at a university with English as the sole language of instruction
    • have attended at least 5 years of English language classes in secondary school, can provide a higher education entrance qualification and have received minimum grades of 4 (sufficient, D) or at least 5 points in the last two school years of these English language classes.
    Can proof of sufficient knowledge of the English language not be provided until the end of the application deadline, admission can be granted under the provision that one of the above-mentioned certificates of the English language will be provided during enrollment.
