Degree and duration

Regular program length of 2 years leading to a "Master of Science (M.Sc.)" degree; 120 credit points (corresponding to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System - ECTS) must be completed. Individual prorgram length may differ from regular program length.

Program structure

The master's program is characterized by a large number of options. You can choose from more than 20 specializations (four of which are taught in English). The topics include energy engineering, optical technologies, automation, electric mobility, communications engineering, high-frequency engineering, medical engineering and aerospace engineering. Within each specialization, you need to complete a set of compulsory subjects which make up about 2/3 of the study program, and additional electives. You are able to arrange them according to the chronology that suits you best. You can also plan for a semester abroad. The master's thesis takes up one full semester and is usually written at the end of your studies.

The Master's degree program serves to further enhance or complement the scientific qualifications acquired during Bachelor's studies. The graduates are able to independently apply scientific findings and methods and to assess their significance and scope for the solution of complex scientific and social problems.

Students choose the focus of their studies by choosing a field of specialization in the amount of 84 credits.

Each field of specialization covers defined, coordinated modules in the compulsory elective subjects "Basic Modules of Specialization" and "Compulsory Modules of Specialization”. In the compulsory elective subject "Elective Modules of Specialization," students can choose modules freely. After graduation, you will be able to find work in a wide range of sectors and functions. In addition to "classic fields" such as energy supply, electrical appliances and electronics, future-oriented fields are opening up, especially in the areas of communications technology, automotive and traffic engineering, automation and optical technologies. Work activities range from research and development to project management, sales and management tasks. Employment opportunities after the master's degree are excellent. The KIT-Career Service can help you with job placement. With a good master's degree from KIT, you can also aim for a doctorate and take the path toward research and teaching. Admission requirements

Admission to the degree program requires successful completion of a degree program resembling the bachelor's degree program in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at KIT in content and volume. The following must be part of the program:

  • advanced mathematics
  • fundamentals of eletrical engineering (e.g. "linear eletrical networks", "electromagnetic fields", "electromagnetic waves", "electronic circuit")
  • systems engineering (e.g. "system dynamics and control systems engineering", "signals and system")
  • digital and information technology

Language skills necessary for international applicants

Applicants without university entrance qualifications awarded by a German-speaking secondary school need to submit proof of the following language skill:

  • German language skills: for application, skills of at least B1-level are necessary. All certificates are accepted; a certificate of attendance of a B1-level course is sufficient. For enrollment, a DSH2 certificate or equivalent needs to be presented.
  • or English language skills of at least B2-level, e.g. proven by Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of at least 90 points in the internet-based test or equivalent. Proof of English language skills is not required for applicants who
    • have completed a degree program at a university with English as the sole language of instruction
    • have attended at least 5 years of English language classes in secondary school, can provide a higher education entrance qualification and have received minimum grades of 4 (sufficient, D) or at least 5 points in the last two school years of these English language classes.
  • Can proof of sufficient knowledge of the English or German language not be provided until the end of the application deadline, admission can be granted under the provision that one of the above-mentioned certificates of either the English or the German language will be provided during enrollment.
