Studiengangsbeschreibung
Degree and duration
Regular program length of 3 years leading to a "Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)" degree; 180 credit points (corresponding to the Europen Credit Transfer and Accumulation System - ETCS) must be completed. Individual program length may differ from normal program length.
Studienaufbau
Der Bachelorstudiengang ist modular aufgebaut.
Er gliedert sich in eine viersemestrige Grundausbildung, welche folgende Bereiche beinhaltet:
- Allgemeine Chemie
- Physik
- Mathematik
- Anorganische Chemie
- Organische Chemie
- Physikalische Chemie
- Angewandte Chemie
Teil des Studiums ist auch der Erwerb von Schlüssel- und überfachlichen Qualifikationen.
Im Anschluss an die Grundausbildung erfolgt im fünften und sechsten Semester eine Spezialisierung in einer der drei nachfolgend skizzierten Studienvarianten:
- Variante A, anorganisch/organisch: zwei Fortgeschrittenenmodule aus den Bereichen Anorganische, Organische oder Physikalische Chemie
- Variante B, physikalisch-mathematisch: ein Fortgeschrittenenmodul aus den Bereichen Physikalische Chemie mit zusätzlichen Veranstaltungen der Höheren Mathematik und der Theoretischen Chemie, ein weiteres verkürztes Fortgeschrittenenmodul aus den Bereichen Anorganische oder Organische Chemie
- Variante C, technisch-anwendungsorientiert: ein Fortgeschrittenenmodul im Fach Angewandte Chemie sowie ein Fortgeschrittenenmodul aus den Bereichen Anorganische, Organische oder Physikalische Chemie.
Der Bachelorstudiengang schließt mit einer dreimonatigen Bachelorarbeit.
Qualification profile of the graduate
The B.Sc. graduates in Chemistry
- have a basic mathematical, physical and general scientific knowledge and a well-founded chemical expertise. They are able to recognize scientific problems and problems in chemistry, to evaluate them, and to formulate simple solutions.
- master the basic scientific methods of their discipline and have learned to use them according to the state of their knowledge for the analysis of recognized problems or technical questions. They know the most important experimental methods in chemistry and are able to perform analytical and experimental investigations, to interpret and draw conclusions.
- can work independently on the solution of chemical problems as well as in teams and record the results of others and are able to communicate their own and the results obtained in the team in writing and verbally.
- have a basic understanding of the chemical core disciplines (inorganic, organic and physical chemistry) as well as selected areas of applied chemistry (chemical engineering and polymer chemistry) and are able to communicate and cooperate with specialists of related disciplines.
- have gained in-depth knowledge and advanced practical work techniques in two selected areas (inorganic, organic, physical or applied chemistry).
- have worked on a completed research area in a scientific environment under guidance.
- have a basic understanding of applications of chemical compounds and materials and processes in different areas of work, know their limitations and dangers, and are able to use their knowledge responsibly and in the interests of society, taking into account safety and environmental requirements. In society, they can actively contribute to the formation of opinions on scientific questions.
- have acquired exemplary qualifications (IT competence in independent modules, team skills, language competence, lecture techniques integrated in specialist modules) and have thus generated impulses for the non-specific requirements of a professional activity for the first time.
- are well prepared for lifelong learning, the use in different professional fields or the acquisition of a higher qualification in their subject by the basic orientation of the training.
Berufsperspektiven
Der Bachelorstudiengang bereitet auf den weiterführenden Masterstudiengang vor. Im Fach Chemie ist nach Abschluss des Masterstudiengangs eine Promotion üblich. Das Promotionsstudium dauert ca. drei Jahre.
Nach dem Studium stehen dir zahlreiche Möglichkeiten in der chemischen und pharmazeutischen Industrie, an Forschungsinstituten, an Hochschulen, im Öffentlichen Dienst oder anderen Industriezweigen offen. Die dort wahrgenommenen Tätigkeitsfelder reichen von Forschung und Entwicklung, über Management, Produktion, Umweltschutz und Vertrieb bis hin zu Marketing oder Beratung.

Admission requirements
German applicants and those with German-equivalent applicant status
Germans, EU nationals, and non-EU nationals with a German university entrance qualification are eligible to study at KIT if they have one of the following qualifications:
- General university entrance qualification (Abitur)
- (relevant) Fachgebundene Hochschulreife (subject-linked university entrance qualification, not Fachhochschulreife / university of applied sciences entrace qualification)
- Delta examination of the University of Mannheim (for holders of a Fachhochschulreife)
- a recognized diploma of advanced vocational training (e.g. technician, Meister diploma for craftsman) or an aptitude test for vocationally qualified persons

Furthermore, prerequisite for enrollment is the participation in a study orientation test (e.g. at www.was-studiere-ich.de) or a study orientation counseling, e.g. by the Zentrale Studienberatung (student advisory services) at KIT, according to §60 Landeshochschulgesetz (State Higher Education Act).
German citizens with foreign school-leaving qualifications must have the equivalence of their qualification with the German Abitur certified by the responsible Regierungspraesidium (regional authority).

For all applicants, regardless of their nationality, participation in the subject-specific study orientation interview is a prerequisite for enrollment.
Foreign nationals (non-EU)
In Germany, the school leaving certificate of institutions in certain countries is accepted as direct means to enter university. In order to start your bachelor's studies in Germany, a university entrange test and / or one completed year of education at an institute of higher education and / or the "Feststellungsprüfung" (test of aptitude of foreign applicants for studies at universities in Germany) needs to be demonstrated in addition in most cases. You can find country-specific regulations in the "Zulassungsdatenbank des DAAD" (database on adimission requirements of the German Academy Exchange Service) or in the Anabin database (database of the "Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen", only available in German). Knowledge of the German language for foreign nationals
In order to be accepted into a study program taught in German, foreign nationals need to demonstrate knowledge of the German language. For your application, you need to demonstrate knowledge of level B1. All such certificates are accepted, even a certificate of attendance of a B1 course. Prepatory courses at KIT: The MINT-Kolleg offers prospective and first-year students support in natural science and technical subjects (STEM).
In addition, the KIT-Departments offer special preliminary courses before the start of the semester program during the "O-Phase" (orientation week).
