According to §60 par. 1 cl. 5 Landeshochschulgesetz, it is possible to enroll for temporary studies for up to two semester "as a rule". Excerpt of the KIT admission and enrollment regulations (§18):

[…] "(1) Studierende anderer Hochschulen, die während eines bestimmten Abschnitts ihres Studiums am KIT studieren wollen (Zeitstudierende), können gemäß § 60 Abs. 1 Satz 5 LHG befristet für in der Regel zwei Semester in einen Studiengang eingeschrieben werden. Entsprechendes gilt für Studierende anderer Hochschulen, mit denen besondere Hochschulvereinbarungen bestehen. Die §§ 1 bis 3, und die §§ 11 bis 16 gelten entsprechend."[…]

Enrollment for temporary studies is possible both for summer and winter term on basis of application for a "higher semester" of a degree program. During the application process, applicants additionally need to fill out the form "Zeitstudium - ohne Abschluss" (temporary studies - no degree) and submit it with all other necessary documents on time.
